Sunny Pak

MD, MPH, LAc

Dr. Pak’s passion for integrative care comes from his own experience with western allopathic and traditional Chinese medical care while growing up in Hong Kong. He started studying Traditional Chinese Medicine on his own before attending college and continued pursuing his interest in classical Chinese studies at the University of California at Berkeley, where he double majored in molecular cell biology and Chinese language studies. Dr. Pak then received his Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, which is the oldest and the first institution in the western United States accredited to offer such a degree. He studied acupuncture, herbal medicine, Chinese physio-massage (Tuina), Qigong, and Taiji under many professors who also taught and practiced Traditional Chinese Medicine in major universities in China. He practiced as a licensed acupuncturist for several years before deciding to pursue his dream of becoming an integrative medicine physician and went on to obtain his western medical degree.

Clinical Experience

Dr. Pak received his MD degree from the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine before he moved to Loma Linda, California, for his double residency training in family medicine and preventive medicine at the Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was a chief resident in the combined program. Loma Linda is well known for being one of the seven Blue Zone communities in the world with a high concentration of centenarians. Researchers attribute their longevity to healthy behaviors of vegetarian diet, exercise, and being part of a faith-based community. Through his preventive medicine training, Dr. Pak had first-hand experience working with this Blue Zone community on lifestyle medicine, as well as behavioral health training in addiction medicine, helping patients with nicotine and alcohol dependence.

In 2013, he moved back to San Francisco to start his practice at Chinatown Public Health Center to care for the underserved communities for more than eight years. During the start of COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Pak was one of the key members from the San Francisco Department of Public Health in helping to disseminate important updates about the pandemic to the Chinese community through many forms of media including television, radio, YouTube, and social media. Currently, he continues to be interviewed on various medical topics offering an integrative medical perspective on different diseases.

At the end of 2021 he transferred to On Lok Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) as the Associate Medical Director to care for seniors in an outpatient setting. He has been providing consultations from both western and traditional Chinese medical perspectives for all his patients before starting his new consultation practice at One Alphacare.
